Project: Clean Custom Tools for Wood-Advanced Materials

The fundamental aim for CleanCustomTool project is to study, define and develop a new methodology, based on a superior comprehension of cutting phenomena, for tool design and optimization. At the same time, CleanCustomTool will produce a new generation of advanced tools for manufacturing of different processes and composite (especially wood-based) materials in order to compete with the market requirements in a clean and eco-efficient. _x000D_CleanCustomTool plans to meet all the fundamental clients’ requirements with a deep and structured research activity about materials and processes, developing an advanced and “in evolution” know-how. By new “expert” design procedures, “modern” testing methodologies and self-made software (SW) tools, a virtual machining approach will be established, COly focused on the useful interchange of information between virtual/real in tool design and customization._x000D_By new productive systems, by a constant growing on productivity and by new materials usage, a permanent increasing in technological innovation and in competitiveness on market will occur. Specifically, the project will investigate aspect on tool manufacturing design, on production processes and in their industrial applications in several wood-related market areas (as houses, furniture, frames, doors, etc.). _x000D_Moreover, all the new solutions for diamonded tools will also be under a strong activity of functional redesign for customizability , in order to increase the applicability and efficiency in each specific sector they will be developed for. Particularly, modifications will be introduced focusing on basic aspects of:_x000D_- a clean manufacturing with a sharp reduction in dust and waste emission_x000D_- an higher flexibility with tools able to process different materials with little modification in cutting parameters_x000D_- the best level of quality and productivity with tools specifically configured and optimized (by “virtual design”) to increase performances (as smoothness of surface)_x000D__x000D_Developments are COly planned to follow considerations and needs as:_x000D_• The tools are requested to keep a continuously growing performances in relation to cutting speed, spindle speed, material&chips characteristics, system reliability and lifetime._x000D_• In R&D units, there is a growing importance and need to standardize all the instruments and methodologies for design and develop, extremely in the case of changeable processes._x000D_• It is necessary to increase performances in terms of process safety and stability, especially considering working with a new “generation” materials (composites, multilayers with plastic elements etc.)._x000D_• In panels working (starting from chips and MDF toward the most innovative composites), it is necessary to define, in a rigorous and scientific way, the different extents that are present and rule cutting processes in order to build up customizable tools solutions with the best technologic and geometric parameters._x000D_These elements, here summarized, represent the primary reason to start, in a methodical way, a study and development activity of innovative and interesting tool solutions:_x000D_• Materials characterization (composite panels) to be worked (COly for equipment applications) and characteristic parameters identification._x000D_• Study of materials technologies for tools aiming at vibrations reduction, thermic dispersion and noise improvement._x000D_• Study of the tool “active” functions integration and monitoring (for ex.. active layers with power testing, temperature, etc.)._x000D_• Structural and abrasive materials technologies.
