Project: Personnel Safety System

The PerSSys (Personnel Safety System) project rises from the market need to improve safety by intervening more efficiently on inhospitable environments where time of exposure to health hazards and an accurate understanding of surrounding environment are critical. The aim of this project is to efficiently answer these challenges by creating a commercially viable personnel safety system (PSS)._x000D__x000D_The PerSSys project is planned to run during 2012-2014 in following phases:_x000D__x000D_1) “The Helmet ‘Smart Hat’” is a safety helmet, integrated with audio and video devices, smart LED illumination system, a variety of sensors and an infrared pulsing device for the localization, is developed._x000D__x000D_2) “Head Mounted Display (HMD)”, including selecting and further developing a light and comfortable HMD that will be integrated into the Smart Hat and be compatible with the “Personal Transmitting Unit” (PTU)._x000D__x000D_3) PTU, integrating various environmental safety and personal health related sensors and developing wireless data transmission between the sensors, the audio-video system and a Supervision Post._x000D__x000D_4) “Supervision Post”, consisting of two independent software projects: a) the CO Control System and b) the Procedure Authoring and Procedure Visualizer Software (PVS)._x000D__x000D_5) “Data Acquisition (DAQ)”, creating an independent system made of dedicated hardware and software to interface and manage communication of data streams._x000D__x000D_6) “WiFi Transmission”, creating a high-capacity wireless transmission system integrated in the PTU and allowing reliable communication between the PTU and the back-end computers._x000D__x000D_7) “Quality Assurance, Integration, Validation, Testing”, to monitor the quality of the other WPs and the project as a whole, and to integrate the various components as a solid, comprehensive tool._x000D__x000D_8) “Management”, to coordinate the project and commercialization activities, including an extensive market study._x000D__x000D_The PSS addresses risks of inhospitable environments such as toxic gases and radiation that cannot be observed by human senses. It will be designed to support Augmented Reality (AR) applications, providing accurate step-by-step work instructions. The PSS decreases intervention time by optimizing the safest work procedures and minimizing the radiation exposure of the personnel. The tool also prevents errors during the process as it can be used to thoroughly train personnel beforehand. Advanced supervision technologies will provide additional safety for guiding or interrupting the work as needed also remotely._x000D__x000D_The CO participant of the project is PRISMA Electronics. The other SME Ps of the consortium are NOVOCAPTIS Cognitive Systems&Robotics, Nexeya Systems, SenseTrix, Space Applications Services, Bodysens, Solid Angle, bgator, ADAS, Composite Design and CRISEL. CERN ATLAS Collaboration will participate as technical expert and test bed._x000D__x000D_ATLAS collaboration at CERN will host the PSS testing in the ATLAS detector cavern, placed 100 meters underground, during the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) COtenance in 2013-2014. This is a unique environment for testing, finalization and fine-tuning the market solution of the PSS. ATLAS will also act as a pilot customer. It will participate in the project as a major technical contributor, funding P and a test bed for the PSS. This gives an advantageous opportunity of working in a close intersectoral collaboration. It is also expected that involvement of CERN ATLAS will tremendously add marketing value of the PSS._x000D__x000D_A part of the project is also to compile a thorough study of the market potential. Besides already recognized important market segments, nuclear power plant COtenance works and approximately 800 000 European firefighters, the end user potential is expected to consist of processing industry as well as highly complex and infrequent COtenance and assembling operations. Based on this study the best market entry strategy will be chosen and new multi-disciplinary end customers sought allowing penetration of wider markets._x000D__x000D__x000D__x000D_

Acronym PerSSys (Reference Number: 6926)
Duration 01/03/2012 - 31/03/2014
Project Topic The project realizes and introduces to the markets an innovative Personnel Safety System (PSS) for workers in inhospitable environments. The PSS will reduce the time of exposure to health hazards and improve the understanding of the surrounding environment while enabling better guidance of the work.
