Project: High Impact Lignin-Cellulose- Composites for Logistics - Development of advanced lignin-cellulose-composites with high impact properties for modular pallets and components for transport systems overview

Aalto University extracted and purified various lignins successfully. These were characterized by Aalto University, TECNARO and Fraunhofer IAP. LSIWCh defibrillated Micro-Celluloses from different plants. These were characterized by LSIWCH, TECNARO and Fraunhofer IAP. Various lignin composites with man-made cellulose fibres, micro-celluloses (from LSIWCh) and bonding agents have been developed by Fraunhofer IAP and TECNARO. Lignin from Aalto University and also commercial lignins were used in composites. Compounds made from blends of lignin and other biopolymers as a matrix, reinforced with man-made cellulose fibres and coupling agents show good mechanical properties, including high impact strength. Therefore, they are suitable for logistics applications. KTU implemented as new VOC measurement technology. Fraunhofer ICT and KTU analysed wood-based raw materials like fibres, lignin and additives and composites made from them regarding VOC and by NIR. Four different demonstrators have been injection moulded with bio-composites from TECNARO under the coordination of ZURRpack: Edge protectors, buckles, stacking aids and logistic boxes.
