Project: Review, Evaluation and Future of Baltic Maritime Risk Managemen

Acronym BALTIMARI (Reference Number: call2017-9)
Duration 01/10/2018 - 31/03/2020
Project Topic Maritime activities in the Baltic Sea area, in particular shipping and offshore energy, involve high risks to human and environmental safety, and economic sustainability. Various stakeholders have implemented processes to mitigate these risks. Several research and innovation projects have been implemented, aimed at improving our understanding of the risks, and developing analysis methods to support decision making, and tools for risk mitigation. Given the complexity of the maritime system, the emergence of new risks due to fast technological change, and the calls for increased attention to foundational issues in risk and safety science, BALTIMARI provides a critical review of the state-of-the-art risk management of maritime activities in the Baltic Sea. The scope is the available risk analysis methods to support decision making, and the available tools for preventing unwanted events and mitigating their consequences. The review focuses on the underlying scientific basis and efficacy of methods used by relevant stakeholders, particularly focusing on developments made in recent projects implemented in Baltic Sea area. Through literature reviews, and questionnaires, interviews and workshops with stakeholders, an assessment is made of the efficacy of research-policy/industry transfer, and ways to improve this. Gaps in the knowledge base are identified and future research and innovation priorities identified. Outcomes include several review articles and policy briefs.
