Project: Future marine assessment and monitoring of the Baltic

Acronym FUMARI (Reference Number: call2017-17)
Duration 01/10/2018 - 31/03/2020
Project Topic The consortium will produce a critical assessment of the current Baltic Sea environmental monitoring programs and the potential and necessity to supplement them with novel techniques. We structure our work into three work packages. WP 1 identifies the gaps with respect to (1) key policy objectives and (2) current procedures of data collection and storage as well as (3) key nodes of Baltic Sea ecosystem functioning. WP 2 will provide an in depth review on available novel cost effective monitoring methods, including recent BONUS projects. Methods are compared in terms of cost-effectiveness, reliability, added value and societal impact and applicability. WP 3 will combine findings from WP1 and WP2 to provide recommendations for improved Baltic Sea monitoring. WP3 will crosscheck the possible conflicting demands of directives, provide an in-depth analysis of the necessary procedural changes and data reporting mechanisms, taking also cost-effectiveness into account. We will identify the key milestones towards a renewed monitoring system in the Baltic Sea using a three-step interactive and participatory process that integrates views of (1) key scientists of novel methods, (2) representatives of national monitoring programs, and (3) economists of environmental monitoring. Our findings can be utilized in a scientifically based plan for the implementation of a modernized, stakeholder, societally and environmentally relevant monitoring system of the Baltic Sea marine environment.
