Project: A Systems Approach Framework for Coastal Research and Management in the Baltic

Complex problems and challenges in the coastal zone call for a holistic approach, integrating the different human activities with the ecosystem capacity and external forcings. In BaltCoast we tackle this complex task using the Systems Approach Framework (SAF). Major objectives are: a) to further-develop a SAF for science and policy integration in the coastal zone into an applicable, user-friendly tool with high practical relevance that allows to deal with complex, multiple and very diverse issues in the coastal zone and integration of spatial information; b) to tackle major thematic coastal issues that require a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, in a manner that is structured, transparent, provides a framework to deal with complex issues and applicable for evaluating solutions with end-users; c) to further develop and apply an indicator-based concept that allows to measure the sustainability and the success of SAF, as well as a concept to integrate the SAF with implementation into existing policy frameworks; d) to carry out intensive training and education to increase the capacity to deal with complex coastal issues in a systematic way and e) to link existing Baltic ICM activities into a lasting Baltic coastal management competence network. The SAF will be applied in 6 coastal case studies in a stepwise, guided process and in 15 re-analyses of  best practice case studies of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) in the Baltic Sea region.
