MariFish

Cordination of European Marine Fisheries Research

Basic Information

Description

MariFish is a project funded by the ERA-NET Scheme of the EU FP6 (Jan 2006-Jan 2011). MariFish brings together the major European national funders of marine fisheries research to form an effective, working partnership. The central theme of the project is to strengthen the links between marine fisheries science and fisheries management. Further information about the MariFish project, including all publications and results, can be found at: www.marifish.net. Here you will also find information about the three projects successfully funded through the MariFish Joint Call: 1)REPROdUCE: Understanding recruitment processes using coupled biophysical models of the pelagic ecosystem. (http://www.pelagic-ecosystems.net/REPROdUCE/index.php?title=Main_Page). 2)BADMINTON: Bycatch and discards: management indicators, trends and location. (http://83.212.243.10/badminton.html). 3)DEFINEIT: Developing fisheries management indicators and targets. (http://www.defineit.dk./).

Main research priorities of the network

Fishery management relies heavily on science; research makes a significant contribution to the translation of the Common Fisheries Policy, and other policy drivers, into practical effect. There is, therefore, a strong sense of overall purpose for fisheries research – that of providing evidence for achieving sustainable fisheries management, set within the ecosystem based principle. Marine fisheries research in Europe is geared towards providing a better understanding of the biology and dynamics of exploited fish stocks and interactions with the marine environment. The results from such research are used together with fishery-dependent data – fishing effort, catch composition, age structure etc. to advise fishery managers on sustainable exploitation rates, the sustainability of technical measures, and the wider impact fishing has on the marine ecosystem.MariFish will bring together the major European national funders of marine fisheries research to form an effective, working partnership
