Project: Promote sustainable agroforestry systems
Acronym | SustAgri |
Project Topic | The project "Promote sustainable agroforestry systems" [SustAgri] aims to foster sustainable agroforestry practices in the MENA region through international and transdisciplinary research and capacity development activities. It focuses on five key objectives: Establishing agenda processes and stakeholder engagement, identifying and providing trainings on traditional and innovative agroforestry systems, developing a digital and open agroforestry decision-support tool, providing new business models and financing opportunities, and empowering local (female) farmers. By enhancing agroforestry structures and considering dimensions such as soil, water management, crop diversity, climate adaptation and mitigation, technology integration and social benefits, SustAgri aims to foster sustainable agroforestry systems. The project will develop an open and digital decision-support tool leveraging stakeholder input and site experience from four living labs located in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Italy. The final web app enables site-tailored, environmental and socio-economic optimization and planning of smart agroforestry systems and recommends suitable business models. Throughout the whole project, emphasis will be placed on training local (female) farmers and considering gender dimensions. SustAgri aligns with the PRIMA call on Farming systems in the Nexus, specifically addressing Topic 2.2.1, "Revitalizing agroforestry practices for sustainable land use and climate resilience in the Mediterranean Region." |
