Food loss and waste present significant challenges to global food security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. A comprehensive mitigation strategy should encompass efforts in infrastructure, education and awareness, policy-making, and regulation, implemented through a collaborative approach involving the entire agri-food value chain, including farmers, producers (industry), retailers, consumers, civil society, and the scientific community. The FUSION PRIMA project aims to minimize food loss and waste in the Mediterranean region by developing a solution comprising a set of technologies, training materials, a guide to best practices, key recommendations, and an ICT tool for monitoring and predicting the shelf life and quality of tomatoes and peppers.
Our solution will be designed to account for the conditions, requirements, and customs of the various Mediterranean agricultural regions involved. Furthermore, we have incorporated measures and interventions across all levels of the food production value chain. FUSION is an innovation initiative with a strong practical focus, which is why we place particular emphasis on exploitation, communication, and dissemination activities, engaging all key stakeholders within the food value chain. Once the FUSION solution components are developed, they will be demonstrated under operational conditions in our target countries: Spain, Italy, Greece, Türkiye, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, and Tunisia. Sustainability (environmental, social, and economic) is another key pillar of FUSION. These factors will be considered throughout both the development and demonstration phases, as well as in the formulation of policy and regulatory recommendations aimed at supporting the reduction of food waste.
