NEWA

New European Wind Atlas Joint Programme

Basic Information

Description

NEWA is a Joint Programme aiming to integrate and coordinate national and regional programmes towards the development of a new European Wind Atlas, allowing for a more efficient use of financial resources and research capabilities. The new Atlas will be based on improved modelling competencies on atmospheric flow and its interactions with wind turbines and wind farms, and will cover all Member States and some Associated Countries, as well as their exclusive economic zones, onshore and offshore. By reducing the overall uncertainties in determining wind the new Wind Atlas will become an essential tool for manufacturers and developers, public authorities and decision-makers.
NEWA will contribute to: the reduction of the cost of electricity generated by wind farms by mitigating risks related to the design and operation of large-scale wind turbines through an enhanced knowledge of wind conditions; better quantification of the European wind energy potential, and provision of data and models that can improve spatial planning tools, ensuring an effective and efficient deployment of wind power. NEWA will foster long-term collaborative research and promote reinforcement of research excellence in the wind energy sector, which ultimately translate into attaining the demanding European ambitions for wind energy generation in the future.
