Project: Development of miniaturized smart wearables with advanced multidisciplinary manufacturing approach

Acronym EMMA (Reference Number: MNET19/NMCS-3661)
Project Topic Smart wearables offer large opportunities for addressing many societal challenges in the fields of health, lifestyle, safety and productivity. In order to enter these markets massively, it is necessary to address first several technical challenges such as the development of scalable low-cost resource-efficient printed electronics processes and interconnection methods, as well as a seamless hardware-software integration. EMMA will address some of these challenges by focusing on the development of 3D smart wearables to be produced with hybrid structural electronics and additive manufacturing technologies. The project will develop and demonstrate a global multi-discipline development system which covers all the necessary steps from process design to manufacturing and validation, with a user-oriented focus. The process will be demonstrated with two novel products which will make use of miniaturised components and the advanced manufacturing technologies developed. A life cycle of the novel products and their impact in the context of a circular economy and sustainable development will be conducted, especially in terms of material reuse and recycling.
