Project: CORdierite Advanced Manufacturing

Acronym CORAM (Reference Number: MNET17/ADMA-1232)
Duration 01/11/2017 - 31/10/2019
Project Topic CORAM project focuses on developing a manufacturing process by ceramic injection molding (CIM) of cordierite for two applications: building equipment for microsatellites and manufacturing infrared industrial heaters. These applications are currently covered by alumina and zirconia ceramics. The reason to find a viable alternative of alumina and zirconia is, mainly, these two technical ceramics cover almost 100% of current market and their demand has increased so much that there is a slight shortage and an increase of raw material costs. Although there are many technical ceramics candidates to replace alumina and zirconia, the main technological handicap is manufacturing process by CIM. New developments in CIM must be coordinated with manufacturing process to obtain valid parts, with required geometries, tolerances, density, dielectric capacity and thermal transmission. CORAM project will employ ceramic additive manufacturing to be able to carry out the development in 24 months and these technologies will be used to validate designs of final parts while manufacturing process is developed. Once validated, final injected parts in cordierite can be obtained as final demonstrator.
