Project: Recovery of industrial parts by means of innovative controlled laser decoating/cleaning process

The application of coatings is a necessary step in a wide range of industrial applications, whether it is for the need to provide the parts with a particular functionality or merely for aesthetic purposes. However, coatings can deteriorate for a number of reasons, and then the need for decoating arises. Therefore, a typical part will undergo several coating/decoating cycles during its service life. In this project, the development of an innovative and tightly controlled decoating process by means of laser technology is proposed, as an effective, flexible, high throughput and eco-friendly alternative to conventional methods. The project proposes a holistic approach, whereby the whole process chain is considered, from the basic laser material interaction to the design and implementation of a new, tailored laser system. The strategic goal of the project is to provide the SMEs with a new tool which will offer them a competitive edge.
