Project: Ultra Precision Steel Machining for Moulds Applications

The goal of UP STING is to boost competitiveness of European electro-optic, ophthalmic and precision engineering SMEs by developing and testing new materials and breakthrough processes in order to enhance and facilitate the Ultra Precision (UP) machining of steel moulds resulting in a high surface quality and high form accuracy. In order to achieve this goal, the objectives of UP STING are to test various steel alloys compositions and to develop innovative machining processes along with automated polishing procedures. By introducing novel steel alloys, hybrid machining processes and robot-aided polishing procedures, UP STING will contribute to effectively produce high quality end products as well as customized products derived from steel moulding, while decreasing time and costs associated with the machining process and, thus, reducing the energy demands and their respective impact on the environment.
