Project: HIP manufacturing Solutions Towards Efficient Revision-prostheses

The HIPster project aims at the definition, development and implementation of a new hip revision prosthesis through the combination of new processing methodologies applied to innovative ceramic compositions, an improved structure design and an innovative deep coating methodology with the goal to obtain a new cost-effective and long-lasting device. There is an increasing demand for hip prostheses according to the increasing in population and age. Besides, 9 out of 10 hip prostheses will require a revision surgery before the first 10 years due to the deterioration of the device with time and use. The scenario in the frame of the hip prostheses is traditionally composed by cemented and cementless solutions, including many different brands, materials and fixations. The most innovative solution is brought by the idea of a device that can be anchored to the patient’s bone without using either cement or metal-back, but by means of a bioactive coating able to promote prosthesis osteointegration with the goal to guarantee the longest durability and a high quality of life. New materials have been considered for the integration of such devices, the most promising of which are advanced ceramics and cobalt-chrome metallic alloys, constituting the best combination for the integration of the device. Nevertheless, recent studies and research projects revealed new possibilities for improving and optimizing such devices in terms of materials (definition and processing), structure design, surface finish and coating methodologies.
