Project: New approaches for SiC and Si3N4 obtaining via polymer nanocomposites and their use for structural ceramics
The project intends to put together the scientific knowledge and commercial interest of partners from Romania and Turkey, in order to obtain 2 advanced ceramic powders, namely silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) by 2 new technologies, both starting from a low value mineral: serpentinite. Serpentinite is a magnesium silicate stone with Mohr hardness about 3 and very few uses, founded in many parts of Europe in the heaps from the former asbestos mining exploitations and which may be processed in mesoporous silica. By a nanotechnology approach (polymerization of a vinyl monomer inside silica nano pores), with later stages, the SiC and Si3N4 powders will be obtained at a lower price an better quality than the actual technologies. The powders will be used in order to obtain ceramic parts for automotive, microwave and other applications.
