Project: Load-bearing implants functionalized of superelastic alloys

The project aims are to develop the manufacturing technologies for adapted geometry load bearing implants with functionalized surface and associated technologies necessary for a new superelastic bioalloy with superior mechanical properties. The approached research strategy for obtaining the original medical devices proposed in the project with advanced surface characteristics has in view the following main steps: synthesis of a high biocompatible beta Ti–based alloy with non-toxic and nonallergic components and alloy plastic deformation to obtain the specific mechanical properties (especially to lower the Young’s modulus); surface functionalization based on Cold Spray technique, for enhanced osseointegrative capacities; obtaining the load bearing implants with superior properties and improved geometry. The mechanical properties of the alloy investigated in the present project, a Gum alloy type, superior to other materials on the market, make possible to obtain medical devices with considerably increased lifetime, which will lead benefit regarding the patient's life quality and economic advantages.
