Project: Light weight carbon fiber compressor impeller/blade manufacturing study

Light weight carbon fiber compressor impeller/blade manufacturing study (ManuCFBlade) aims to achieve TRL 4 and some steps towards TRL 5 and 6 for using light weight composite materials like carbon fiber for the impeller of aerodynamic compressors, taking it beyond the state-of-the-art. The target is the rotating assembly of such compressors since they represent the bigger challenge in weight reduction. The proposed research will result in reduction of the total weight of the rotary assembly and in better performances related to fuel consumption and pollutant emission reduction for energy machines having aerodynamic compressors. Innovation on the approach of ManuCFBlade project consists in the perfect integration of the selected lightweight thermal and mechanical resistant materials, design methodology and related manufacturing methods. The main difference to other similar project is the proposed aeroelastic design studies on such complex geometry in strong relation to the manufacturing process using the autoclave technology.
