Project: Development of a flexible manufacturing technique for double curved precast concrete panels

In the last decade architecture has abandoned the Cartesian system, thanks to the geometrical possibilities of the computer during the design and engineering stage. However manufacturing and constructing such geometrical complex elements in a feasible manner is a barrier within the context of the building industry. Both during the construction of modern buildings and the retrofitting of existing ones, the bottleneck of 3D shaped elements is the very high cost of tooling, because a mould is required for every shape and dimension of the element which has to be developed. The RE-BUILD system to be developed within this project can overcome the bottlenecks associated to existing systems for manufacturing of 3D shaped elements for both new and retrofitted buildings, addressing also the strong need for energy saving, through the development of an innovative reconfigurable tooling concept to be applied within the building construction and retrofitting field.
