Project: Tools and Coatings for the machining of complex Ti-base parts for aeronautic applications and thin wall parts

Titanium alloys offer high strength-to-weight ratio, good heat treatment capability, low density, high toughness, excellent corrosion and creep resistance, and biocompatibility. These properties have made titanium and its alloys to become more and more popular in several applications, in spite of the drawback of its bad machinability that causes low productivity rates and increased tool wear. The aims of the project are (I) the definition of the working conditions for precision manufacturing: the machining of complex 3D Ti-parts made of Titanium and (II) the development of a new family of tools for machining titanium and titanium alloys with enhanced performance and lifetime, made of PKD and coated cemented carbides. The research activity is devoted to the study, design and realization of innovative tools and to their test in operative conditions, following the requirement of real industrial applications as in the case of complex components for turbomolecolar pumps which request sophisticated measurement equipments.
