Project: ACces to TImely Formal Care

In the absence of a cure for dementia, most research is aimed at an early diagnosis as it opens the way to timely future care and treatment, and can help people take control of their lives and plan ahead. However, people with moderate to severe dementia and their carers are often not receiving services of the type, quality and timing that they need. The overall aim of the ambitious ACTIF Care study, uniting 8 EU countries, is to better understand the reasons for this mis-match between the need for, access to and use of formal care services. The project objectives are threefold: Firstly: motives are explored why people with dementia and their carers use, or fail to use formal care services. Secondly: current health care services in the European countries are described aimed at finding innovations to improve health care. Thirdly: costs, and consequences will be evaluated. A mix of methods will be used to obtain these objectives. The ultimate goal is to optimize the care for Europeans with dementia in the middle phase by identifying best practices and finding the best fit between needs and appropriate use of care services.
