3D movies have become more and more successful throughout 2000-09, culminating in the unprecedented_x000D_success of 3D presentations of Avatar in December 2009. At the last Consumer Electronic Show 2010 in Las_x000D_Vegas, 3D standards have emerged for Blu-Ray and HDMI. Major CE brands have announced product such as_x000D_3D capable television and 3D Blu-Ray player. Cable and satellite providers in the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan,_x000D_and Korea have announced plans to broadcast contents. All the technologies being commercialized require_x000D_the use of glasses for 3D over the next few years to achieve the stereoscopic effect. _x000D__x000D_There are two basic types of glasses, active shutter glasses and passive polarized glasses. Passive ones are lightweight glasses, low price but optical quality is lower than that the active shutter glasses._x000D__x000D_The goal of this project is to develop universal 3D active shutter glasses for 3D applications at home (TV,_x000D_Console Gaming, Pay per View) and at theaters. 3D Glasses must present the advantages of passive and the_x000D_quality of active system. The ACTIVEYES' 3D active glasses will thus offer a universal 3D viewing technology in any environment and on any device. The 3D glasses will offer a very high quality Stereoscopic images without any ghosting matters, but also with minimal light loss._x000D__x000D_The Consortium assembled to carry out the work comprises:_x000D_- A research-based SME (Volfoni R&D, France) a subsidiary of the European leader VOLFONI for 3D glasses rental, to develop and test active shuttered 3D glasses,_x000D_- A research-based SME (LC-TEC Displays, Sweden) to research and develop novel lightweight materials and_x000D_manufacturing processes for high-quality 3D glasses,_x000D_- A public academic and research center (Military University of Technology, Poland) for which one achievement is preparation and application of special liquid crystal mixtures._x000D__x000D_The CO tasks of this project consist in designing and developing a range of fashionable, lightweight and comfortable glasses with an improved optical quality and a lower price. An early stage prototype could be on the market within 24 months branded ACTIVEYES, followed by other 3D glasses taking benefit from all the R&D results provided by the Eurostars support. Thus, the first universal 3D glasses will be ready to be manufactured at the end of the project. _x000D__x000D_Because the market is moving very fast, and because there are strong competitors in the USA and in Asia, the consortium would like to underline here that getting support is strategic to gear up the businesses of each participant. The 5th EUROSTARS call is a great opportunity to settle a crucial Pship between participants. The consortium will take benefit from the Eurostars support to invest in R&D and thus be able to challenge their competitors in the years to come. The time to market for products is 24 months (end of the project), if the consortium wants to compete accurately._x000D__x000D_To sum up, ACTIVEYES project aims to settle the technical and business opportunities to sustain a new European leader on the 3D glasses market and thus allows a real competition with the leading US company (Xpand). 1. Research & Development for new LCD cells_x000D_Many mixtures have been investigated during the course of the projet. For the production process, because of their good electrooptical properties, two specific liquid crystalline mixtures have been selected: a mixture for 3D glasses with polarizers as well as a mixture for 3D glasses without polarizers._x000D__x000D_2. Research & development for new plastic substrates_x000D_LCTEC have, during the production development phase, modified a series of process steps to be adapted for the manufacturing of plastic shutters. They have also during this work found out several innovative and efficient new process steps for making a reliable product. They have identified a material set-up and shutter design that can be used for a broad range of flexible shutters._x000D_With the current knowledge, LCTEC is now ready to process the FRONT-END and BACK-END LC-shutters for 3D-glasses application._x000D__x000D_3. Active Glasses for Stereo viewing_x000D_Volfoni R&D have managed to make a prototype supporting multiple protocols for cells with polarizers and an electronic board to drive the cells without polarizer.
