Project: Design and Implementation of a Workflow Management System for Services Management Environment

CO project goal is the design and Implementation of a Workflow / Business Process Management System for the Services Management Environment with a special focus on the telecommunications industry. Another goal of the project, is the design and implementation of an Application Simulator in order to capture, validate and define functional requirements of Business processes visually, based on the Workflow._x000D__x000D_Problem:_x000D_For today’s telecommunication service providers, the management of services is seen as a key differentiating factor in the flexible delivery of telecommunication solutions._x000D_Increased competition and globalization of markets have created pressure on telecommunications service providers to support service oriented, reusable management components which can optimize the adaptation of business and systems processes._x000D_Thus, telecommunication service management is a key enabler for the rapid introduction and flexible delivery of telecommunication services and applications. _x000D__x000D_Telecom service provider support systems hold the key to their ability in delivering differentiated services. But today, these support systems do not meet all the requirements of service providers. Lack of process management facilities results in inefficient and inflexible processes. _x000D__x000D_Demand:_x000D_A crucial issue facing telecommunications service providers is the need to provide flexible, cost effective, management systems, which can rapidly adapt to changing customer requirements and market opportunities. This need is addresses as the development of management solutions comprising re-usable management components. _x000D_In the competitive environment of the telecommunications industry, service providers must increasingly save costs and reduce their time to market, whilst at the same time deliver ever higher qualities of service to their customers._x000D__x000D_Solution:_x000D_There is a growing awareness that workflow / business process management tools and techniques could provide a vital element in the coordination of distributed components within different provider doCOs while allowing greater flexibility and the necessary degree of autonomy . _x000D__x000D_A workflow management system is a system that defines, manages and executes workflow processes through the execution of software whose order of execution is driven by a computer representation of the workflow process logic ._x000D__x000D_Workflow management can be considered an attractive technology for integration and interrelation of telecommunication management components._x000D__x000D_The purpose of applying workflow management technologies in the service management doCO is to integrate and re-purpose management components that resolve business problems, and to automate management services. Such enhancements, i.e. the interrelation of service management components, reduce the business process complexity, improve resilience and improve the overall performance of the providers business process._x000D__x000D_The workflow management system can be used also as an infrastructure for developing various applications._x000D__x000D_Application simulation is a new emerging area in the Requirements Management Engineering. Nowadays, is difficult to define business processes between Key Users, Business Analysts, Projects Managers and all stakeholders involved in business processes definition. Application Simulation allows defining Business Processes visually without misunderstanding requirements between stakeholders._x000D_Justinmind will develop and Application Simulator in order to simulate: user interface and data flow hyper-realistic behaviour. The Application Simulator will be fully oriented to the Telecom DoCO and Justinmind will create specific components and modules for the Telecom DoCO._x000D__x000D_Our consortium consists of 2 R&D performing SME companies from Greece and Spain._x000D__x000D_EXIS is a Greek software development and consulting company in the services industry, with rich expertise in the telecommunications doCO._x000D__x000D_Justinmind is a leading European company developing Business Application Simulation and Specification Validation Services._x000D__x000D_Also, for R&D purposes, both companies have secured as subcontractors local Universities.

The CO result of the project from EXIS side was to design and implement a WMS/BPM (workflow / business process management system) in order to provide workflow engine based integration of a number of service components within an existing infrastructure in the services management doCO. A special focus was given on the telecommunications industry. The CO aim of the project has been accomplished and the project is considered as a success story for EXIS R&D team._x000D__x000D_After the completion of the project, almost any complex business scenario can be defined starting with a simulation performed with Justinmind's Prototyper and later be implemented using EXIS’ WMS/BPM (workflow / business process management system).
