Project: Automated Walled Garden Service Creation Platform for IPTV / Interactive TV

The most basic method for creating IPTV / Interactive TV service is to create a series of web pages which are viewed on a television with a set top box (STB) and navigated with a remote control. STB presents a menu similar to an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) from which the user selects content designed for TV viewing. Such content is referred to as a "walled garden"._x000D__x000D_Web2Garden provides an automated "Walled Garden" service creation environment for service providers and operators to be used in online service offerings and controlled internet environments, with an easy to use and compelling user interface on TV for the end users and subscribers. _x000D__x000D_Today all of the online services are geared towards using a PC with mouse and keyboard. Service providers and operators offering online services such as e-commerce web sites, e-shopping portals, news, blogs, video streaming services or XML/RSS feeds will be able to use Web2Garden automated service creation platform to realize such services on IPTV/interactive TV. Web2Garden transforms real-time interaction with the online services in a multimedia experience fully utilizing the potential use of remote controller for enhanced, easy to use and all in one package._x000D__x000D_The implementation of a efficient, easy to use and simple user interfaces on a TV screen becomes important for the end users that may realize the potential benefits and use of web sites and data services reachable via IPTV/interactive TV platforms. _x000D__x000D_In digital television, the convergence between TV and internet is a realistic scenario in home networks and in the near future, the number of available online content and services will increase rapidly where the TV set will become the privileged entry point for knowledge and information distribution. Enabling a simple interaction for all end users with a huge amount of data using TV sets will require new technologies and interaction paradigms discovered in the field of cognitive ergonomics._x000D__x000D_Web2Garden addresses the principles of usability by all users so that both new and experienced users successfully perform tasks within a newly emerging TV interfaces, with or without the need of technical knowledge and experience. The presentation and the navigation tools that are used by the web sites and online data services becomes intuitive while the Electronic Program Guide like approach implements a TV compatible way to interact with the TV set, increasing the end user’s immersion, usability ,and the knowledge distribution within the television environment. _x000D__x000D_Web2Garden is an end-to-end open client-server system that service providers and operators will use in order to define, implement, control and manage Walled Garden services that the IPTV / Interactive TV operator or service provider will offer. Web2Garden has a management interface that defines services and manages a range of areas that include media assets, subscribers, transactions and subscriber entitlements. _x000D__x000D_As well as customized user interfaces and specific service requirements, Web2Garden's “Automated Service Creation Tools” will allow the service providers and operators to create their IPTV/interactive TV service or walled garden portals in the shortest frame of time where the service could be deployed on any server that supports Java and related technologies._x000D__x000D_The project includes research, development and validation activities with the objective of making IPTV / Interactive TV environments smarter, more responsive, interactive and more accommodating to the needs of the user for online services that will be offered. The project follows a multi platform approach, analyzing all digital television architectures: cable, satellite, terrestrial and IPTV.

Purpose: The CO goal of this project is to enable operators interactive capabilities regarding to their provided content. More specifically, we aimed to ensure that operators will be able to deliver content that comes from the Web according to subscriber needs and requirements. In other words, if a client is equipped with a TV that does not support HD format then the system will ensure the proper transcoding from HD to SD format. _x000D__x000D_Achievements: _x000D_1.
