Project: Serious Games dev. platform for older workforce training and intergenerational knowledge transfer

Acronym SeniorLudens (Reference Number: aal-2013-6-039)
Duration 01/04/2014 - 01/10/2016
Project Topic Older workers often face two major problems compared to their younger colleagues, due to either internal reasons or external societal factors: (1) difficulty in adapting to new workplaces and new procedures, often discouraging them from engaging in new professional and voluntary activities;(2) the enormous experience and knowledge they have accumulated over decades of work is often not well valued, or even unknown. It is also a problem for companies, which lose this knowledge once older employees leave the organization. There is thus a need for technological solutions which help organizations to integrate older employees and to capture and retain their knowledge.Serious Games in 3D virtual environments that reproduce aspects of the workplace can help older people to familiarize with a new environment, virtually train work procedures and detect difficulties before getting engaged in new tasks. This allows them to receive objective feedback on their capacities in a secure environment and to feel more motivated when performing the real tasks. Furthermore, reality-based memory training has provided promising results in preventing memory decline in elderly adults. The creation of professional training games requires highly specialized technological skills. In general, organizations need to externalize game implementation, which is expensive, often unaffordable. So, there is a need for tools able to automatically implement the games created by professionals who are not aware of computer games technology. Therefore, the main goal in SeniorLudens project is to integrate innovative technologies in order to provide organisations with a development platform for fast, easy and cheap creation of serious professional training games, suitable for its use by the older workforce. This will be assessed in three application areas (IT companies, healthcare, food processing)due to their strategic relevance will represent specific services ready to scale up at European level
