Project: Networked InfrasTructure for Innovative home Care Solutions

Acronym NITICS (Reference Number: aal-2012-5-255)
Duration 01/05/2013 - 01/12/2015
Project Topic The NITICS project proposes an innovative holistic, integrated and cost-effective platform that is capable of bringing the services that allow elderly and disabled people to live healthy and longer independently. NITICS will enable a range of services including localization of elderly and their objects. Movement pattern analysis of elderly and disabled people inside their homes in NITICS, integrated with body sensors and environmental captors will enhance the assistance to elderly and (in)formal caregivers. A bi-directional multimedia platform (using TV/PC/Smartphone) eases stress on caregivers, stimulating communication and supporting daily activities. Such a system will help formal caregivers to intervene only in case of need but in a timely manner. NITICS provides the needed help, taking into account the preferences of care providers as well as family and end-users, eventually improving the quality of life and service. NITICS is an innovative platform with major benefits to elderly, and (in)formal care givers at the same time, treating everyone with equal importance. Current independent living services for active healthy aging are highly fragmented: information is not being shared between service providers, devices are constrained to idiosyncratic service offerings, and architectures are typically closed. NITICS will tackle this problem by using open platforms and allowing open APIs for future enhancements. Elderly or informal caregivers could suggest new applications. NITICS integrates multiple wireless and sensor technologies, actively involving primary and secondary end-users and developing business models that bring value to stakeholders. This will open the door for high potential markets in Europe and beyond, targeting the enhancement of the quality of life of elderly. NITICS couples the future business opportunities with a humane view, by also allowing anyone to contribute and share new apps openly for the benefit of humankind.
