Project: Safe mobility of elderly in the vicinity of their home and on journeys

Acronym SAFEMOVE (Reference Number: aal-2011-4-094)
Duration 01/07/2012 - 01/07/2015
Project Topic Several are the reasons why the elderly become reluctant to travel or even to take a walk: besides physical impairment, orientation problems and the feeling of insecurity in terms of criminal offence and, more in general, missing confidence in the own abilities to cope with “easy” tasks in nowadays daily life (e.g. buying tickets for public transportation, taking money from the bank or even selecting products and paying for daily shopping). SAFEMOVE aims at encouraging self-confidence in own abilities providing both home-based physical and cognitive training as well as relevant information and location-based aids during outdoor life activities. By providing contextualized help in difficult situations, SAFEMOVE will reduce elderly people reluctance in facing issues related to outdoor life. Following a robust user-centred design approach based on a strong involvement of real end users - elderly people, family members, healthcare providers, nursing operators - SAFEMOVE will integrate technologies for: home-based training and self-confidence enhancement through motivational/persuasive games, user-friendly outdoor location and navigation, social inclusion and communication through Web2.0 technologies, easy access to the solution features through an engaging portal and suitable interaction devices. Based on a detailed analysis of the pilot demonstrators and the project results, the potential for a sustainable commercialization of the developed tools, methods, and services will be worked out. This will open new financial channels for industrial sectors that build part of their business model on the development, usage, support, and exportation of technologies enabling AAL for the elderly on the move upon application of the innovative solutions developed by SAFEMOVE. And a “service model” will be defined to find the most suitable way to integrate mobility and training services proposed by SAFEMOVE within the portfolio of existing private/public healthcare services.
