Project: iWalkActive - The Active Walker for Active People

Acronym iWalkActive (Reference Number: aal-2011-4-112)
Duration 16/08/2012 - 16/08/2015
Project Topic Active living is a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines. This is particularly important for older people, as regular exercise can increase both mobility and the potential for independent living. In the last decade, rollators and walkers have become very common mobility aids, and in Sweden and Germany roughly 4% of the population uses a rollator. But very often people in actual need of walking support opt to do without a walking aid, because of the stigmatizing effect it has on the user. The aim of the iWalkActive project is to combine modern ICT-technology with an all-terrain walker to enable people to stay physically active, for example walking and hiking in beautiful outdoor surroundings. iWalkActive is a highly innovative, open and interoperable platform, that greatly improves the end user’s mobility. At the same time it encourages physical activity, by offering guidance, navigation and safety while performing a multitude of outdoor activities on accessible routes. It can even guide the user in indoor environments, i.e. to find the best way to the own hotel room within a large wellness resort. Technically and conceptually, the idea goes well beyond that of a conventional walking aid. The iWalkActive concept offers its end user: (1) Barrier-free navigation and orientation system tailored to walker users (2) Context aware algorithms for adaptive user-walker interaction (3) Customizable service options downloadable through AppStores (4) Community concept for the establishment of a hiking-route databank (5) Innovative docking interface for mobile devices (6) Assistive e-drive based on hi-torque wheel hub motor & control (7) Attractive Walker design with features providing access to all outdoor environments. The aim of the project is to provide a solution for active elderly that enables them to experience outdoor activities, enjoy everyday life and travel on holidays.
