Project: A Non-stigmatizing (MOB)ility and (E)mergency (C)all (S)ystem Ensuring A Safe Outdoor Mobility Chain

Acronym MOBECS (Reference Number: aal-2011-4-038)
Duration 01/07/2012 - 01/10/2015
Project Topic This project proposal focuses on the enhancement of the mobility of elderly people by ensuring their security through holistic mobile services and devices and a communicaion portal. Therefore, mobile Information and Communication Technologies as well as methods for automatic emergency detection by incorporation of already existing systems (such as smartphones and their in-built sensors) will be investigated and developed. Those systems allow emergency calls and signalization, communication, getting information, navigation and assistance as well as the usage of services with new mobile devices (such as smartphones) independent from the users location. The main barrier for mobility in older ages nowadays is the lack of security and adequate help in critical situations. This problem is present over the whole mobility chain and becomes even more serious, if elderly people, for example, go out for a walk alone. Sometimes it happens that elderly don't dare to get in contact with unknown people due to fear, e.g. in public transportation. In order to encounter this problem and to avoid gaps in the mobility chain - which usually appears if people decide to renounce on mobility because of a feeling of insecurity – it is important to ensure security, either by the possibility to raise an alarm, calling out for help in an ambient way or just getting in contact with care givers or their family over a larger distance. On the other hand, approximately 350.000 German households are equipped with an emergency call system and use the corresponding services. These services allow elderly or disabled people to live independent within their homes much longer, while their demand on security is satisfied. Unfortunately, the functionality of nowadays domestic emergency call systems is usually restricted to the manual activity of an emergency, either by a device that can be worn as a bracelet, or a button installed in the apartment.
