Project: Innovative ways of banking designed for and by the elderly

Acronym Bank4elder (Reference Number: aal-2010-3-039)
Duration 03/10/2011 - 03/10/2014
Project Topic BANK4ELDER aims to provide a set of innovative ICT based solutions for banking access designed and developed for and by elderly Europeans. Current ICT based ways of banking are not used by the elderly because they do not fit to their needs. BANK4ELDER will fulfill elderly needs from a functionality, accessibility, usability and aesthetic point of view, leaning on 3 pillars: multimodal access, ubiquity and customized solutions. The idea is to develop new interfaces for each way of banking (online, Automated Teller Machine, mobile and TV) adapted and customized to each user (e.g. remembering most used services, increasing letter size or decreasing menu options), offering elderly users a comfortable and safe interaction. Elder people will have the opportunity to access banking services by their own, anywhere and anytime, trough the wide variety of personalized banking accesses. The new interfaces will be firstly installed in the Santander Group’s banks, due to their interest in the project results, but they will be designed with the possibility to be adapted and sold to any bank in Europe. The target group of BANK4ELDER will be current older people (>65) but also future older people (50-64) for promoting active ageing, optimizing opportunities for participation and security to enhance their quality of life following WHO guidelines. Elder-centered design of BANK4ELDER approach will increase elderly people’s capability of financial management, a key issue to ensure elder autonomy and independency. The new interfaces will enhance elder participation in the self-serve society, bringing the Information Society nearer to them and thus getting used to interact with new ICT solutions. Elderly people will participate actively assessing their real needs and providing the interfaces’ requirements, they will test conceptual designs and prototypes, and finally, they will try the new ways of banking in a pilot test in a real environment.
