Project: Guidance and Awareness Services for Indepent Living

Acronym ROSETTA (Reference Number: aal-2008-1-143)
Duration 01/06/2009 - 01/06/2012
Project Topic The objective of ROSETTA is to help community dwelling people with progressive chronic disabilities (a.o. Alzheimer?s Disease and Parkinson?s Disease) to retain their autonomy and quality of life as much as possible and to support their (in)formal caregivers by developing and providing an ICT system that offers activity guidance and awareness services for independent living. The proposed system monitors the activities of the elderly person by variety of sensors. Most of them are unobtrusive, not worn on the body. The monitored activities are assessed in relation to the individual?s typical behaviour. Unexpected inactivity will generate an alarm, which is forwarded to the carer. A broad variety of information, including the health record and a model of medical expertise, will be incorporated in the situation assessment. Changes in typical behaviour, arising from chronic diseases or a long-term deterioration are detected and reported to the caregiver too. In addition the system will support the elderly person directly in carrying out his or her daily activities. For example, if the system recognizes difficulties with certain activity it will provide activity support by giving information on the next steps to be taken. In this way the system will enable elderly people with progressive chronical disabilities to stay in their own home for a longer period in a secure manner. The ROSETTA system will be evaluated in field trials with end-users in three countries: Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. The evaluation will focus on the user friendliness and usefulness of the system, as well as on the impact of the system on the autonomy, quality of life and delay of nursing home admission of the elderly people with chronic disabilities and the burden and feelings of competence of their informal caregivers. A business model will be developed to implement the developed ROSETTA system in regular care arrangements for elderly people with progressive chronic disabilities.
