Project: Behaviour pattern based assistant for Early Detection and Management Of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Acronym BEDMOND (Reference Number: aal-2008-1-026)
Duration 01/06/2009 - 01/06/2012
Project Topic It is an ICT-based system for an early detection of Alzheimer`s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases focused in elderly people while living at home. With such an early detection health professionals can later on apply an early pharmacological treatment which is proven to delay Alzheimer`s disease appearance and consequently help the elder to live longer independently at home. It consists of: - a tool for the caregivers at home to be informed about the last activities` performance. It is based on in-home multimodal sensors network data and subsequently processed for situation recognition information - an alert tool to inform about home alarm signals and react quickly on high risky situations - a main support tool for medics addressed to the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. This will be done: * Firstly, by continuous tracking daily activities` performance of the elder at home (situation recognition information) * Secondly, by periodical monitoring of user behaviour evolution and trends: previous step is compared with a set up and recorded behaviour pattern; intelligent rules to be applied after concern with health professionals` criteria in order to infer whether the behaviour changes might mean a beginning of a neurodegenerative disease or not (diagnosis) * And when it is determined, a pharmacological treatment is applied by the medic in such an early stage. Then the support tool helps to monitor the delay of the Alzheimer`s disease evolution. The project`s goals involve the concepts of user, product and exploitability: - User acceptance - Assurance of ethical and legal issues - Friendly interface - Combining and integrating technologies (not research) - Full functionality refined prototype - Getting a ready-to-market-product in one year time after project. The consortium and workpackages structures and leaderships, the design, development and test methodology and the workloads size and distribution precisely aim at these targets.
