Acronym HAPPY AGEING (Reference Number: aal-2008-1-113)
Duration 01/04/2009 - 01/08/2011
Project Topic The lives of many older people in Europe are injured by chronic diseases, involving diabetes and obesity, mental decline, low vision and psychological implications such as the sense of frailness. The HAPPY AGEING project approaches, on one side, main limitations due chronic diseases, low vision or malnutrition and dehydration and, on the other, manages the individual needs of dietary control, safety and wellbeing. The main objectives are: i) to prevent the set up of chronic conditions and manage such conditions when present, supporting independent living; ii) to develop and integrate a customizable system matching demand of technology by elderly with the current market supply; iii) to directly involve the end-user in the development phase, assessing the user?s expectations and needs, assuring user acceptance of the new system; iv) to stimulate business innovation and create market opportunities to distribute and sell HAPPY AGEING devices. HAPPY AGEING system will be composed of three main modules: - a lifestyle monitor capable of recording main activities that takes place in the home and compare them with habits of the monitored subject. The aims are to remind the user about activities that need to be performed and to allow remote contact with carers monitoring lack of activity or unusual behaviours. - a navigation assistant to support user?s mobility in close environment Such a system may prove particularly useful for people affected by either low vision or difficulties of orientation, whereby some indications of own localisation may be a valuable support. - a personal assistant characterised by two main functions: support in performing actions and support in searching for personal objects. HAPPY AGEING will integrate sensors already available on the market in a pervasive intelligent system to guarantee transparency and low invasiveness to the end-users.
