Project Topic Ageing population and increasing number of people affected by chronic diseases bring to a rising healthcare costs. Therefore, actors involved in the system should welcome solutions looking to technology for efficiency gains and cost reduction. Health literacy is low in ageing populations, but some contributions evidence elderly easily picking up custom-fit technology, interested in symptoms self-management. Furthermore there is a need for unobtrusive/motivating applications to keep elderly mentally and physically active, allowing a longitudinal follow-up of the cognitive capacities. Thanks to a business model routed in a horizontal network approach to open innovation, the platform Brain@home provides solutions for elderly and people whose conditions may influence independence and quality of life with great attention to the loss of physical, cognitive and social functioning. Brain@home will pursue the following objectives: technological breakthrough developments; monitoring/improving/maintaining cognitive status through serious gaming; cognitive decline early detection; end user centred design; business development through SMEs and major companies’ participation. The project will develop: intuitive Virtual Reality Applications interface for touch pc; VR paths for visiting sites (i.e. museum, cities) from different perspectives; brain training exercises to track/monitor cognitive improvements. This Application will also get people in touch by virtual social nets (for interaction among participants, impressions exchange, meetings, etc). A 3D like graphic style using a virtual SW engine will create the chosen environment. The data record will be tracked trough the Kinect system. End-user will be involved in pilot sites (Romania, Italy and Hungary); pre-post trial will last 6 months; 40 subjects per center (Total=120). Eligibility criteria: elderly people, aged over 65 years, with general healthy conditions.
