Project: Integrated data visualisation and decision making solutions to forecast and manage complex urban challenges

Acronym UrbanData2Decide (Reference Number: 4099940)
Duration 01/09/2014 - 31/10/2016
Project Topic In an increasingly complex environment, cities and urban areas have to continuously deal with unprecedented challenges. Therefore, one of the most important tasks of city governments is to be aware of new challenges, problems and conflicts and to identify them when making operational or strategic decisions to prevent serious damage or disruption. Still lacking in this context are modern solutions, which make use of state of the art technology to support local governments in this demanding task. This project will explore the potential of such tools by designing an integrated and multi-dimensional model that combines vital information sources. These sources will be mainly comprised of public social media content and open data libraries. Building on these information pools a high-performance monitoring framework to process, filter and combine these data will be developed. The framework will extensively use data mining, sentiment analysis and visualization techniques and lead to the development of a proof-of-concept demonstrator to present the output using intuitive and clear dashboards. This technical solution will be complemented by an expert module where, once key topics and challenges have been identified by the automated mechanisms, input from external experts can be added to the system.
