Project: High Speed Multi Camera Automated Optical Inspection

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) deals with the Process and Product quality control of Surface Mounted Technology (SMT) Printed Circuit Boards Assembly (PCBA) lines. This is a 400 MUSD market growing at about a 10% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR). 50% of the market is in Asia. The AOI technology is mandatory today to achieve increasingly agressive Product quality and productivity objectives. _x000D__x000D_Any Automated Optical Inspection equipment provider will strive to obtain reliably the best possible defect detection rate at the manufacturing line throughput. Therefore one always encounters a trade off between inspection optical resolution (the smallest possible defect captured) and the speed at which the inspection is performed. _x000D__x000D_The purpose of this project proposed by ViT and ISD is to resolve this trade off at a lower equipment cost by bringing a disruptive innovation to the AOI market. Classically a high speed and high resolution camera is moving on a X/Y high precision gantry to acquire object images. In the Matrix concept, an array of camera modules will acquire the image of an inspection area and process simultaneously the individual field of views after image reconstruction and calibration. _x000D__x000D_The consortium is composed of ViTechnology® and ISD . _x000D_ _x000D_ViTechnology® (VIT) is a leading provider of advanced solutions that enhance the yield of electronics assembly. Its inspection system covers applications such as inspection of solder paste, pre-reflow and post-reflow component and joint inspection in SMT assembly lines. It is composed of a board handling system and a mobile inspection head. The inspection head is composed of a high resolution high quality camera, a telecentric lens and controlled illumination. The software processes acquired images and detects 100% of defects with a low false call rate. Project Topic The aim is to build a high speed inspection solution for the Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) market (400 M$ market segment). It is based on a pixel synchronized multi camera array, boosting dramatically the performance of the AOI process at a reduced cost of ownership for the customers.

As a result of an excellent collaborative work between Ps, both_x000D_- an high end solution tragetting "niche markets" with outstanding performances is going to be offered by ISD_x000D_- an extremely market competitive 3D images acquisition system has been developped by ViT, as a major value added building block of a new Vision Inspection system generation to be launched by end 2012, early 2013. _x000D_The assets coming from such a technology gap are expected to bring a major advantage to both ViT and ISD on their respective markets, creating an important entry barrier to other competitors.
