Project: Remote Home-Physical Training for Seniors

Acronym MOTION (Reference Number: aal-2012-5-031)
Duration 01/09/2013 - 01/01/2017
Project Topic It is widely recognised that adapted regular physical exercise improves drastically both the physical and emotional well-being and allows older adults to stay healthy longer, with a better quality of life, while being more independent and far less costly to the society. Today, services for physical exercise provided by an individual coach at home are too expensive, require the deployment of a large number of coaches and are made difficult due to the distance between the coach and the user. At the same time, the demand for these types of services cannot be satisfied and is increasing. The mission of MOTION is to increase life expectancy, independence and quality of life of a wider population of older adults by proposing a novel remote service through an ICT platform. MOTION will thereby directly contribute to the aim of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing to increase by 2 the average number of healthy life years in the EU by 2020. MOTION will develop a holistic ICT platform and service for seniors allowing remote adapted physical training provided in real-time by a coach to four persons. This innovative approach will allow increasing the access of older adults to personalised training at home at a more affordable price. MOTION gathers all the required competences to develop and test the service proposed. The coordinator is a leading organisation in physical training for seniors. The inclusion of end-users as partners and a large pilot assessment in three countries will allow adapting the service completely to the end-users’ logic and ensure its acceptance. MOTION also involves leading technology SMEs with specific needed expertise in ICT. Academic partners will provide important input for the assessment of the solution and some exploratory developments which may enhance the service in the future. The creation of partnerships with the relevant stakeholders will allow a planned very quick commercialisation of MOTION after the project.
