Project: Exoskeleton Legs for Elderly Persons

Acronym EXO-LEGS (Reference Number: aal-2011-4-030)
Duration 01/10/2012 - 01/04/2016
Project Topic The EXO-LEGS project brings together end-users, industrial companies, and research organisations from an EU dimension to specify the indoor and outdoor mobility needs of elderly persons to enable them to continue living independently for as long as possible. The project targets elderly persons who are beginning to have mobility and mild cognitive difficulties but wish to remain active and independent. The mobility issues addressed relate to both loss of functionality in both legs and one leg becoming weak, for example following a stroke. Basic, Standard and Deluxe active lower limb exoskeleton prototypes (half- and full- models) will be designed and developed using an open modular approach to meet the requirements of end users, with an EU perspective. Particular focus will be given to elderly persons in the primary target countries of Sweden, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. The prototype exoskeletons developed will be tested and validated in research labs before being validated by elderly users in pilot end user test beds in the target countries. The exoskeletons will also be looked at from a standardization compliance perspective and activities to ensure that the designs comply with the existing and emerging ISO/IEC standards for physical assistant personal care robots and medical robotic devices will be carried out. Commercial partners active in this sector are included to formulate business and service models to ensure they are able to commercialise the results within 2-3 years of the project ending.
